So pink and pretty, it's hard to tell how this colorful morph came to be called "volcano." The species, Cherax destructor, originally comes from the western part of Australia, and is a very adaptable and active addition to any aquarium, especially one designed for crayfish. Though primarily herbivorous, and easily fed flake or pelleted food meant for vegetarian fish, these yabbies (as they are called in their homeland) can grab hold of slow-swimming and bottom-dwelling fish. They are also very sensitive to ammonia, so keep up the filtration! The water parameters that we maintain for breeding are pH of 7.0, KH at 40 ppm or below, and GH below 60 ppm. Bottled water in the 5-gallon jugs seems to work perfectly, with regular water changes. Our adults are breeding at 5" in length, can grow up to 8"!
